This month we are encouraging young coders to do their bit and combine creativity and technology to come up with innovative ways to use a BBC micro:bit, to help protect life on land and below water. We’ll guide them through how to use built in light, temperature and accelerometer sensors and send them home full of inspiration to find a solution for the Global Goals challenge. Perhaps using the light sensor to create a ‘safe beach’ light for sea turtles?

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (commonly known as the Global Goals) were agreed in September 2015 by the member states of the United Nations. They are the most ambitious agreement for sustainable development that world leaders have ever made. The BBC micro:bit Foundation has set up a challenge in the search for solutions to Global Goals 14 (life below water) and 15 (life on land) and invite young people aged 8-14 to submit their ideas with the chance of winning a trip to London and participating in a do your :bit event. Due to current government restrictions, this event will now take place online via video call.

What you will need:

You will need an internet connected device to take part in the session. We recommend a laptop, but activities should be possible to complete using a tablet – please get in touch if you want to discuss the requirements.

You don’t need a BBC micro:bit to take part but if you would like to work on one at home you could borrow one from Oxfordshire libraries (you must reserve your micro:bit in advance) or you can buy your own – Sarah recommends Kitronik https://kitronik.co.uk/collections/microbit-and-accessories/products/5615-bbc-microbit-starter-kit

An appropriate adult must always be nearby during the day and will be responsible for monitoring your child’s online activity. As always, we encourage you to work with your child on their project.
