What is a delusion?

It can mean different things in different contexts. Even contemporary psychiatry and psychopathology have several interpretations of a delusion. So when is a delusion an unusual belief, and when is it part of a mental health disorder? Could our understanding of the word “delusion” encroach on irrational beliefs in people without mental disorders – and if so, what does this say about rationality?

Philosophy In Pubs will be joined by  Matthew Broome, Professor of Psychiatry and Youth Mental Health, and Director of the Institute for Mental Health, at the University of Birmingham.

Venue

The Chequers
131 High Street, Oxford, OX1 4DH
