Make a difference for Oxford Green Week

Thursday 6th June 2019

It’s Oxford Green Week (OGW) and Science Oxford is lending its support with events and activities for all the family on the theme of One Planet Living.

OGW is a summer festival that uses culture, creativity and community to inspire local people to take action against climate change in and around Oxford. It’s a celebration of all things good and green in the city and aims to show local people how they can save money, get fit and be happy whilst being kind to the environment.

So what will we be doing? Well, we kick off on launch day with our Maker Club Juniors (8th June, 10am), who’ll be digging deep into the recycling box to find items they can use to design and create their own bird feeders. At Maker Club (8th June, 1pm) its free-reign OGW fun as our Make Oxford makerspace becomes a hub of green creativity.

If you book tickets to our second opening event at the Science Oxford Centre in Headington (Saturday 15th June) you can have a go at testing water samples for pollution, use air monitors to catch your breath and learn how to clean-up microplastics. Or if the great outdoors is more your thing, grab your gardening gloves and come to our family Conservation Day at Stansfeld Park (June 16th) and help build raised beds and bug habitats for the woodland’s wildlife inhabitants.

And while you’re on site, check out our other green credentials. We have started a programme of maintenance to ensure the tree stock in the woodland is sustainably managed – in fact we’ve already planted over 25 native species. Creating a more varied environment will significantly improve the quality, diversity and quantity of birds, amphibians, reptiles, insects and mammals we have on site.

Our amazing new building, which is home to the Science Oxford Centre, has a 5,000 sq ft green roof, seeded with a variety of wild flowers and grasses, which also promotes biodiversity. The roof, which has a 49KW solar array that helps provide power to the building, also has a run-off to keep our ponds topped up with water.

So come and join in with our green week events, try something new and together we’ll make a difference.

“You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.” —Jane Goodall
