Primary schools gear up for the Big Science Event 2018

Friday 2nd March 2018

Calling all Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire primary school teachers! With almost 100 schools and over 13,000 pupils signed up to take part in the Big Science Event 2018, we can’t wait to see what your classes come up with. If you’re struggling to get started, don’t worry – you’ve got plenty of time before the Easter holidays for your students to complete their investigations.

We’ve been busy searching out the best resources to inspire your classes and a selection of our favourites is below:

  • Take part in the CLEAPSS Challenge or try out last year’s investigation by challenging your students to design and build the best marble run. You could even borrow our Marble Mazes kit to give them a chance to explore ideas before coming up with their own.
  • Ditch the Dirt puts designing filters into a real world context and even comes with a ‘well done’ certificate for taking part in the challenge.
  • Terrific Scientific features videos of characters from children TV, bands and athletes investigating topics from taste to time. They’re engaging and fun, with lots of opportunities for extension.

All these resources can help get children thinking about how to investigate a problem and solve a challenge. The Big Science Event is all about pupil led-investigation, so make sure that your students’ own ideas are at the heart of what they’re doing and we know we’ll be seeing some fantastic work during the cluster judging next term – can’t wait!
