November 1st registration date for the Big Science Event 2017

Wednesday 5th October 2016

The Big Science Event is a competition for primary school pupils across Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire which asks them to create their own science experiment or investigation, and present their findings to a panel of judges. And we’re delighted to announce that registration for the 2017 competition will open on Tuesday November 1st 2016.

Over the next few months, teams of budding young scientists will be competing to win new science-themed playground equipment for their school, with a grand final held next summer.

The Big Science Event has grown hugely in popularity over the past six years; just 17 schools took part in 2010 but 40 schools signed up in 2015 and last year we had sixty. It is co-ordinated by Science Oxford and generously sponsored by Playforce and Abbott Diabetes Care.

bse2“Doing the experiments has been the best bit, using your own idea and finding out what you’re doing”  Pupil, Edlesborough School

“It’s interesting, makes me feel like science is important to me and I learnt new language like decay and transparent and what they mean” Pupil, Millbrook Combined School

Pupils work in small teams and use their own creative skills to devise their own open ended science investigations which they then carry out, record results and present their findings. Teams can be from any year group and the investigation can be run as part of a school science week, science club, science lesson or even as a homework project.
