World Space Week

World Space Week is an international celebration of science and technology, and their contribution to the betterment of the human condition.

It is held each year from 4th to 10th October.  Why are these dates significant?

  • On 4th October 1957, the first human-made satellite, Sputnik 1, was launched, which opened the way for space exploration.
  • On 10th October 1967, the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies was launched.

Now, World Space Week is celebrated around the world with space education and outreach events held by space agencies, aerospace companies, schools, planetaria, museums, and astronomy clubs. It is coordinated by the United Nations with the support of the World Space Week Association.
