This event will now be run online, due to the new Government restrictions from 5 November to prevent the spread of COVID-19. If you have tickets and would like to join the online session, no further action is required and the club organiser will contact you with arrangements. If you are unable to attend the club online, you can request a refund via Eventbrite or you can transfer your ticket to one of our Creative Computing Clubs in December, again via Eventbrite.

Code your own adventure for National Novel Writing Month, as we encourage young programmers to get creative this November. Write an interactive storyline with options like a ‘Choose your own Adventure’ book, then change the fonts, colours and add pictures to it using HTML and CSS (the same languages used to code websites). Our digital designers can continue working on their masterpiece at home, and share their adventure with friends and family.

The online club will run throughout the day through a combination of video calls and a monitored chat platform, so your child can work through the instructions at their own pace.

You can join in any of the session times – approximate schedule below.

10:00-10:30 Video call introduction (a recording will be made available)

10:30-11:30 Work on project – help given via monitored chat

11:30-12:00 Optional video call – FAQs & debugging

12:00-14:30 Work on project – help given via monitored chat

14:30-15:00 Optional video call – FAQs & debugging

15:00-16:30 Work on project – help given via monitored chat

16:30-17:00 Video call showcase to demo your projects

Log in at 10am for a live introduction with Sarah Townson the club leader, or watch a recorded introduction before each session starts.

Further information, consent forms and sign-in instructions will be sent on, or before, Wednesday 11th November. If you cannot access the required software on your device, we will issue you with a full refund.

Please contact our Clubs Officer, Sarah Townson direct on [email protected] with any further questions.

We look forward to seeing you at the online club.

Get coding with expert guidance at our monthly hands-on programming club for young technologists. Our fun sessions reflect real world scenarios as coders bring their own projects to life with the latest tech gadgets, experimenting with BBC micro:bits, speakers or lights and programming in a variety of languages such as Python, Scratch or MakeCode depending on the session.

We encourage creativity and self-led learning with themed projects, and practice patience and problem-solving skills in learning to debug computer code. Resources are available so that projects can be continued at home (this *may* require additional kit) and digital projects can be shared with friends online. Beginners welcome!

Science Oxford welcomes all children to our clubs. If you or your child has additional needs, please get in touch to discuss how we can best support your child to make the most of the club.

We are committed to inclusion and we recognise that cost is sometimes a barrier. Funded places for eligible families are now available, thanks to the Austin and Hope Pilkington Trust. Families could be eligible for these places for several reasons; for example, if your child receives free school meals or is a looked-after child. Get in touch at [email protected].
