Young stargazers discover the wonders of space at the Science Oxford Centre

Thursday 4th December 2025

I learned that I am so tiny compared to space

From meteorites to the Moon, young explorers discovered the wonders of space at our stargazing evening and family planetarium show at the Science Oxford Centre in November.

Visitors enjoyed an incredible opportunity to observe Saturn and the Moon through telescopes provided by volunteers from the Abingdon Astronomical Society. We also witnessed a fly-by of the International Space Station.

Oxford’s Space Store showcased fascinating meteorite samples and demonstrated hands-on techniques for identifying genuine meteorites. The team also brought along impressive replicas of ESA’s (European Space Agency) space suits for children to try on.

Families experienced the scale of the universe in an out-of-this-world planetarium show with our resident Space Specialist, Kat Kelly. Young people also created artwork inspired by the Moon’s craters.

Local families from the East Oxford area were invited to enjoy the illuminating evening thanks to funding from The Oxford Trust.

Sian Stratton, Engagement Manager at Science Oxford, said: “This was our fourth Starry Night and with clear skies, it was a great opportunity for families and young people to see Saturn and the International Space Station in real time, with astronomers and experts on hand. It was fantastic to welcome the Space Store team. Do join us for our next Starry Night evening in February!”

Our Universe is ginormous!

Visitors to Starry Night said they will now look out for the Moon, read more books and do their own research into space. Our young stargazers were excited to share their learnings: “The Moon is younger than Earth”, “Our universe is ginormous!”  and “I learned that I am so tiny compared to space.”

As the December Full or ‘Cold’ Moon lights up the winter sky, closing out the year with a Super Moon – go outside and look up!
