Afterschool Club Sparks STEM Excitement in Barton Community
Wednesday 10th September 2025

Science Oxford was delighted to engage and inspire young people from Barton, Oxford thanks to a successful partnership with Barton Community Association, creating a lasting impact for children through our Science Afterschool Club.
The initiative, launched in January 2023 to make science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) more accessible and fun, reached over 40 local children over 46 sessions, welcoming an average of 10 each week during the term time sessions. Young scientists could try hands-on experiments and creative challenges, and take part in exciting demonstrations designed to fuel curiosity and confidence.
Our goal was to show young people that science is not only everywhere – it’s for everyone!

Hosted at the Barton Neighbourhood Centre, the club provided a safe and inspiring space where children could explore topics ranging from human biology and engineering and environmental science. Activities included building their own rockets, investigating slime chemistry, and designing their own experiments — always with an emphasis on learning through curiosity and exploring.
“Our goal was to show young people that science is not only everywhere—it’s for everyone,” said Sian Stratton, Engagement Manager at Science Oxford. “By combining creativity, collaboration and curiosity, we helped young people see themselves as future scientists, engineers, and problem-solvers.”

The Barton Community Association works to improve opportunities and wellbeing for local residents. Kristine Bunayog, the Association’s Youth and Community Education Worker, said “Science Club has proven to be a popular after-school activity among children in Key Stage 2 at Barton Neighbourhood Centre. While being educational, Science Club provides a fun environment for the children that encourages them to learn more. The sessions have taught children about various topics and helped them in developing different skills. They are always excited to show or tell their parents or carers about what they did every end of the session!”
As the Barton Science Club concludes, we are looking ahead to build on its success. Both Science Oxford and Barton Community Association remain committed to supporting future opportunities to empower young learners across Oxfordshire.
Science Oxford works across Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire inspiring families and young people about science in communities, schools and in our Science Oxford Centre. Find out more about our programmes here.
