Taiwanese delegation visits the Science Oxford Centre

Thursday 26th September 2024

On Wednesday 25th September, The Oxford Trust welcomed representatives from the Taipei City Government Department of Education in Taiwan to the Science Oxford Centre as part of their trip around the UK to gain insight from organisations in the field of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) education and draw inspiration to enhance the development of STEAM education within Taiwan’s basic education system.

Yu-Hsin Cho, Division Chief, Information Technology Education Division, Taipei City Government, explained that Taipei City is developing a STEAM centre with selected primary and secondary schools to teach and develop courses that they will then take and roll out to teachers in other schools.

She said, “In this way, we wish to strengthen STEAM education. We aim to teach students skills to face the future, including application of technologies. They need to develop the skills to think independently and solve problems in daily life.”

The delegation consisted of key figures in advancing STEAM education at various educational levels in Taipei, including the Section Chief of Information from the Taipei City Government Department of Education, as well as principals and teachers from primary and secondary schools who are responsible for promoting STEAM education in Taipei.

Andrew Kensley, The Oxford Trust’s Deputy Director of Science Education, said, “It was a pleasure to welcome the delegation from Taiwan today, to show them around the Science Oxford Centre and inform them about our education and engagement programmes. It was interesting to hear about the proposed developments in Taipei City and to share ideas and experiences of science learning and teaching.”

Yu-Hsin Cho said, “We have seen how you integrate interactive exhibits in the Exploration Zone, outdoor trails and activities, and different experiences into STEM learning. We hope to be able to incorporate some of your practices in our education system. We are grateful to The Oxford Trust for hosting us on this visit. This has been a valuable experience for us.”

We wish the team luck in developing their new STEAM Centre in Taipei.
