Tell us about your job
How would you describe your current role?
I have a lab based role in a medium sized team where we are trying to generate protein molecules which highlight cancer cells to the immune system. I split my time between data analysis, planning experiments for myself and my team and being in the lab doing experiments myself.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
There is a really positive attitude at Immunocore. On the whole, everyone is very focused on producing high quality results but helping others at the same time. It also has more of an academic feel than larger pharma which breeds a lot more research.
What do you enjoy least about your job?
At times, it can be stressful. There are always plenty of things that need to be done and sometimes it feels like there aren't enough hours in the day!
Who or what inspired you to follow your particular career path?
I actually would have to thank my GCSE/A Level science teachers who were very passionate. I knew I wanted to move into industry but the getting a PhD and post doc experience would be beneficial.
What advice would you give to any young person considering a STEM career?
I would suggest they spend a week during summer time shadowing a research scientist (either at uni or in a company). I would say that it is a very worthwhile and rewarding set of fields. Luckily, the industry seems to be on the rise in the UK at the moment as well.
